branding 101 // why creatives need other creatives

I recently read something I wrote as a Facebook update 5 years ago, “Dreaming of doing my own thing #photog dreams”. It may not be the most poetic or profound thing I’ve ever written, but I remember exactly where I was when I wrote it. I was sitting behind a front desk, dying at a job that wasn’t what I expected. Out of pride, I was determined to stick with it and stay for a couple years. That’s what would be acceptable, right? Or at least that’s what I thought …

11 months later I jumped ship. To another soul-sucking job. From there, I bounced around from one job to the next, hoping the next one would be somewhere I’d like to stay. It took 4 years for me to understand that it wasn’t the jobs, it was me. I needed to change.

So how’d I do it? How did I get the courage to leave the normal, secure, 9-5 life and dive deep into the small business,¬†entrepreneurial, one?

Friends. Creative ones.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know that it matters who you surround yourself with on a daily basis. I found the creative souls around me and didn’t let go. The kinds of people with big dreams like me and who felt trapped in the 9-5 just like me.

At lunch, we’d find a place to hide and dream together. Over our meal prepped grain bowls, we’d talk about the careers we wished we had, the creative pursuits we wished we made more time for, and the businesses we hope to some day own. Our dreams were BIG, creative and groundbreaking. They were scary and exhilarating at the same time. And they felt possible, because we had each other. We didn’t feel alone.

Many of us don’t realize our potential because we feel alone. Am I right?¬†

When was the last time you talked with your best friend about what you really wanted to do? What are you really scared about but want at the same time? What is your big dream that is only a whisper in your heart right now? Do you even have a friend that you can talk to about these things? If you don’t, get one ASAP.

Why creative friends matter:

  1. They cheer you on when you feel like giving up.

  2. They give you a constant audience to bounce new ideas off of.

  3. They give you new perspective.

  4. Two or three heads are better than one.

  5. They bring tequila when you need a break.

  6. They push you to be true to yourself.

  7. They bring in skill sets that you don’t have (*shout out to Mary the tax queen!*).

  8. They know more people than you do, more people = more opportunity.

  9. They make you laugh. Laughing is important.

  10. They push you, your brand, your dreams forward.

Long story short, find friends with dreams. Push each other to keep going. And also, tequila. Pair it with a dance party and you’re golden. If you’re looking for a friend, hit me up. I’ll buy you a drink and we’ll chat dreams. It is my favorite thing to do, after all.
